Why does the colour of your sofa matter?
Our research shows colour is the #1 factor shoppers consider first when browsing sofas online – let’s explore the main reasons why.
- Can make a room feel bigger or smaller, relaxed or more formal
- Impacts the mood of a room, whether you’re looking for calm or warmth
- Can be better at hiding dirt, dust, or stains (darker colours we’re looking at you)
- Interacts with natural or artificial light, toning down glare or creating a ‘glow’
- Creates sharp contrast or a harmonious pairing with flooring and walls
- Sets a focal point in a room, making it feel like ‘the finished picture’
The most popular sofa colours
When it comes to choosing a sofa colour, people usually fall into two camps – the easygoing neutrals or the bold and bright shades. Which feels most like you?
Neutral sofa colours: warm and cool tones explained
It’s no surprise that neutral sofa colours are often the most chosen from the showroom floor. They tend to pair easily with a broad range of colours and help set up a cosy, relaxed environment – which is often what people want their living rooms to feel like.
Within this set of colours, you have cool or warm neutrals, which are distinguished by their undertones – the subtle hues beneath the surface colour that influence its overall appearance. Warm neutrals have red, yellow, orange or brown undertones, while cool neutrals have blues or greys in the background.
Warm neutrals
Picking a neutral colour with warm undertones like beige, or terracotta can introduce a welcoming and comforting energy into your space.
Sofas in these shades layer well with other warm colours and natural elements such as rich wooden floors, green plants.
Cream/off white
Beige & taupe
Light brown and tan
Chocolate browns
Cool neutrals
Cool neutrals have a sleek, sophisticated quality, with pale blues, optical whites, or charcoal greys helping their surroundings feel calmer.
As a general rule, cool neutrals pair easily with white walls, chrome, glass and wooden furniture with lighter tones.
Stone
Charcoal grey
Pale blue
Navy blue
Warm and cool colours can work together – neutrals are naturally softer and more easygoing, so it’s perfectly possible to contrast a warm rust sofa with cool blue scatter cushions, for example. The difference in vibrancy and colour depth is what makes the visual pop.
That said, colour clashes do require a little more thought and experimentation to ensure you’re happy with the result. Visiting a poltronesofa showroom in person can help you decide on a colour that looks fantastic in your space.
Bold & colourful sofa colours
Picking a brighter sofa colour might feel quite natural or a little daunting, depending on your personal style.
Either way, a bold and colourful sofa doesn’t necessarily make a loud room – there are ways to incorporate statement shades into your home decor that might just feel like the finishing touch you’ve been waiting for.
Calabrina 3 Seater Sofa
Green
An increasingly popular sofa colour that’s often requested in our showrooms.
From deep forest green to soulful sage green, this is a colour that pairs exceptionally well with rich tones found in natural wood or brass.
Darker colours (such as a black feature wall) can sharpen the vibrancy of a green sofa beautifully, while strong reds and greens can look a little festive when put together – which may or may not be the design goal you have in mind.
Paderno 3 Seater Power Recliner Sofa
Red
A colour many associate with confidence and boldness.
Pure red might feel quite high energy for a living room sofa – but when blended with warm undertones such as brown, it can take on a whole new character.
This can be seen in poltronesofà Mirtillo 455 fabric, a wonderful burnt-red shade, or Mirtillo 300, a more vibrant ruby red with softening cream undertones.
A red sofa often pairs well with warm neutrals such as cream or rich brown, while also complementing cooler shades like navy or light blue.
Regina Fabric 3 Seater Sofa
Yellow
The colour of sunshine, mustard fields, and fresh citrus – acts as a real mood-lifter for many of us.
It tends to sit alongside blue quite beautifully – its opposite on the colour wheel – but can look visually exhausting when not used in harmony with the rest of the room.
Try pairing a yellow sofa with navy walls or mid-blue scatter cushions for an almost regal effect, or for a more laid-back living room, you could bring a mustard yellow sofa together with rich wooden flooring and furniture.
Meleto 3 Seater Power Recliner Sofa
Blue
Often regarded as one of the world’s favourite colours, perhaps due to its connection to natural elements like sea water or summer skies.
A blue sofa can have a calming, restful effect in a home, and its remarkable versatility helps it pair with everything from warm neutrals to bold shades like mustard and blush pink.
There’s also a lot of variety when it comes to this colour: thoughtful turquoise, rich peacock blues, elegant deep navy.
With over 30 blue upholstery options at poltronesofà, including real leather and soft-touch fabrics, you can find the shade that feels most at home in yours.
What colours go with black sofas?
Black is a category in itself – neither neutral nor bright, it’s wonderfully versatile and makes a statement without introducing any colour to the room.
Black pairs easily with most shades and can look particularly striking alongside metallic elements like silver, gold and brass – though it can feel overpowering in large quantities.
Black real leather such as our Arabis 910 looks especially premium in the way its natural sheen showcases the unique textures in the grain, while black fabric can have a softer, calming quality alongside deep reds, greys and greens.
How to choose a sofa colour that looks beautiful in your room
Did you know that the direction your windows face can affect how your sofa appears?
Understanding the differences in north, south, east, and west-facing light is one of the best ways to choose the right colour sofa for your home.
South-facing light is naturally richer and deeper throughout most of the day, and the dappled sunlight streaming through windows can make rooms feel warmer. Most colours look good in a south-facing room, however if the quality of the light is particularly strong, you might want to bring a sense of balance with fabrics and leathers in cooler pastel shades, such as light blue or sage green.
North-facing light is paler and milder, which can make some rooms appear a little dark at times. To counter this, pick a sofa in warmer colours and undertones, such as neutral cream, rust, or sunflower yellow for a brighter setup. Alternatively, you could lean into the quiet, peaceful north-facing light with cooler tones such as violet or navy blue.
East-facing light is brighter and stronger in the mornings (because that’s where the sun rises in the UK), cooling down by the late afternoons. Think about the time of day you’ll use your sofa most. If you’re a morning person who tends to enjoy breakfast on the sofa, pick a colour that blends well with stronger natural light, such as beige, warm reds, or dusty pinks.
West-facing light is cooler in the mornings but gets much warmer in the afternoon and evening. Lean into the warm tones with an orange rust or terracotta sofa that will practically bloom into colour each afternoon at ‘golden-hour’, or seek balance with deep greens, charcoal or blue-greys.
As well as light, your sofa should complement the rest of the room around it, including the colour of walls, flooring, and furniture.
This means thinking about the room as a whole and where you want those relaxed neutral moments – the tans, beiges, greys and blues – and where you want those pops of colour and warmth.
If your room already features white flooring and darker grey rugs or furniture, you’re looking at quite a cool-toned room. The poltronesofà Etienne Midnight Blue 540 could feel fresh and uplifting, while Amaranto Optical White 000 delivers a sleeker edge.
Homes with natural textures like exposed brick or wooden beams can look beautiful alongside real leather upholstery. Macadamia Dark Cognac 757 could work wonders in bringing out those earthy tones.
If your living room has wooden flooring and bold feature walls, a warm neutral colour sofa such as Narciso Light Beige 004 or Callisia Taupe 008 can soften the mood for a cosy, relaxed feel.
